THE STARTING POINT

Search experience optimisation (SXO) connects discovery with the experience after someone arrives. The page should answer the search question, work on the visitor’s device and offer a clear next step. A conversion is useful when it is appropriate for the customer and the business can fulfil it.

Match the promise to the page

Read the title and description a visitor may encounter, then open the page on a phone. Does the heading address that promise? Can the visitor tell who the offer suits, what is included and what happens next? If an “online booking” page only offers a general contact form, explain the request process clearly rather than implying immediate confirmation.

Give each page a primary action appropriate to intent. A buyer comparing software may need a requirements checklist before requesting a quote. A restaurant guest may need today’s menu and a reservation route. Avoid repeated pop-ups that interrupt the answer, especially before the visitor has had a chance to understand the offer.

Treat speed and accessibility as part of the offer

Use appropriately sized photographs, reserve image space to prevent jumps, and load decorative features without blocking the main content. Let people reduce motion. Make text legible, links distinguishable and buttons easy to activate. A beautiful animation adds value when the enquiry route remains reliable.

Core Web Vitals measure loading, responsiveness and visual stability. The current “good” thresholds are LCP at most 2.5 seconds, INP at most 200 milliseconds and CLS at most 0.1, assessed at the 75th percentile. Lab tests help diagnose problems; use field data where available to understand actual visitors.

Make the next step understandable

Ask only for information needed for the next conversation. Explain required fields, give errors next to the relevant input, and preserve entered information after a validation failure. State whether submitting sends an enquiry, requests an appointment or starts a purchase. A customer should never have to guess whether the action succeeded.

Test with keyboard navigation and on a small screen. Check that a floating contact control does not cover form buttons. If WhatsApp is offered, use the business’s actual channel and state its availability accurately. A handoff to staff should include the customer’s selected service so they do not need to start again.

Measure the handoff, then improve one thing

Record the journey from landing page to action started, action completed and qualified enquiry. Define events consistently, and respect consent settings. A completed form without a delivered notification is not a working lead process. Check both the interface and the receiving workflow.

Prioritise one specific problem: an unclear price assumption, unnecessary fields, an obscured button or a slow image. Write a hypothesis and compare appropriate periods. Low traffic makes A/B tests difficult to interpret; moderated usability checks and customer questions can provide more useful early evidence.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Your first-release checklist

  • Confirm that page content delivers the search-result promise.
  • Use one primary action and explain what happens after it.
  • Test page and forms on mobile and with a keyboard.
  • Respect reduced motion and keep decorative work lightweight.
  • Verify lead delivery and track qualified outcomes.

What to measure

Start with your own baseline. These are definitions for your team to track, rather than promised improvements or industry benchmarks.

Task completion
Can visitors complete the relevant enquiry or booking request without assistance?
Form success and delivery
Measure successful submissions and confirm the business receives the enquiry.
Field performance
Review loading, interaction and stability using real-user data where available.

Useful questions

Is SXO the same as conversion optimisation?

They overlap. This guide starts with the search question and follows the visitor through the page to a suitable action; conversion work can cover additional acquisition channels and customer journeys.

Should we remove every animation for speed?

No. Keep animation purposeful, lightweight and compatible with reduced motion. Test its effect on the actual content and tasks rather than relying on visual preference alone.

Is a high Lighthouse score enough?

A lab score is a useful diagnostic, but it does not prove the page answers the customer’s question or that enquiries are delivered. Combine performance checks with accessible task testing and real outcomes.
