THE STARTING POINT
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is an industry label for improving visibility in search experiences that generate answers. For Google’s AI search, the foundation remains ordinary SEO and useful, reliable content. The practical task is to make your expertise and offer easy to verify, then observe how discovery changes.
Build on your search foundations
Google says its AI search experiences do not require a special optimisation method or extra schema. A practical starting point is a working, indexable website with useful content and clear navigation. An elaborate “AI visibility package” does not resolve an inaccessible service page or an offer the customer cannot understand.
Review access rules, page status codes, canonical URLs and the text visible on the page. Keep your genuine business name, services and contact details consistent. Describe availability and limits explicitly. Search inclusion and citations remain decisions made by the platform; implementing a checklist does not guarantee either.

Publish the detail a buyer needs to compare
Create a page that answers an actual buying decision: off-the-shelf CRM versus a custom workflow, a booking request versus an instantly confirmed reservation, or website pricing versus software pricing. State the conditions that change the recommendation. Describe integrations by their supported access and limits, rather than listing every popular logo.
For a South African audience, use rand for local examples, explain remote support arrangements, and cover the handoffs that matter to the industry. A delivery business needs exception handling and proof-of-delivery questions. A training business needs course dates, entry requirements and the status of its qualifications. That specificity gives the resource value beyond a generic definition.
Keep claims traceable
Attach evidence where the claim is made. Link a project to its real live website when you can. Distinguish a client project from a concept demonstration. Show an original process diagram or screenshot with explanatory text. If a price or platform policy can change, record when it was checked and assign someone to update it.
Do not invent customer quotes, growth figures, awards or industry credentials to make a page look authoritative. A modest, specific example is more useful than an impressive claim that cannot be supported. Ask a subject specialist to review content in regulated or technical fields before it becomes part of a public offer.
Observe discovery without confusing it with sales
Maintain a small set of representative questions and record the platform, date, answer, citation URL and whether the information is accurate. Repeat checks consistently, understanding that generated answers vary. This sample is a research diary; it is not a complete measure of the market or a reliable ranking position.
Microsoft’s AI Performance preview in Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations across supported AI experiences. Citation counts do not describe how prominently a page was presented. Combine any available platform reports with referral visits and the customer’s eventual enquiry. A cited page, a clicked page and a qualified lead are different events.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
Your first-release checklist
- Keep the site indexable and service information consistent.
- Answer one meaningful comparison using explicit conditions.
- Label demonstrations and link real evidence where available.
- Date changing claims and give each resource an update owner.
- Track citations, referral visits and qualified enquiries separately.
What to measure
Start with your own baseline. These are definitions for your team to track, rather than promised improvements or industry benchmarks.
- Accurate citation observations
- Record which pages are cited and whether the answer correctly represents the offer.
- AI referral enquiries
- Track identifiable referral visits and completed enquiries, with attribution limits noted.
- Content freshness
- Count priority pages with current facts, evidence and an assigned review date.
Useful questions
Is GEO different from SEO?
The labels describe different discovery experiences, but much of the practical work overlaps. This GEO guide focuses on useful comparison content and evidence; our SEO guide covers the core website and query plan.
Can you guarantee a ChatGPT or Google AI recommendation?
No. Answers vary by system, prompt, context and available sources. We can improve the website, content and measurement process, but do not control another platform’s recommendations.
Does GEO require a special schema?
Google says there is no special schema required for its AI search features. Use appropriate structured data that reflects visible content, and validate it for the specific feature you are targeting.
